7.2 External features of buses

Buses must be easily distinguishable, especially when approaching among other traffic. Advertising livery which distorts the appearance of a bus should not be used.

All buses must have their route numbers displayed on the front, rear and sides of the bus. The destination should be placed adjacent to the front and side number panel. The near side route number and destination panel should be located at eye level.

These signs must be visible both day and night under all lighting conditions. Numerals and/or letters must be white, or yellow on a black background. The letters should be back lit to improve definition especially at night.

All route numbers must be a minimum of 200mm high and all destinations should be displayed in upper and lower case letters and be a minimum of 125mm high (see Fact Sheet 4.3 Signs and Notices).

Where these external displays are electronically generated or controllable, this information should also be available in audio form when initialised by a triggering device.

In darkness, all doorways and the area immediately outside the bus doors should be illuminated when doors are open.
