Principles and policies

2.7 Access to Education

All disabled children should have access to education. Wherever practicable, this should be in mainstream schools within the local community. The Code of Practice seeks to:

• Advise on the statutory responsibilities of education bodies in the
  preparation of accessibility strategies and accessibility plans
  
• Encourage schools to increase the extent to which disabled pupils can
  participate in the school curriculum
  
• Promote improvements in the delivery to disabled pupils of written
  Information that is provided to pupils who are not disabled
  
• Encourage improvement in the physical environment of schools to
  Increase the extent to which disabled pupils can take advantage of education and associated services.

Education related development should incorporate suitable provision for disabled pupils, staff and visitors. Any new development providing education facilities will, wherever practicable, provide suitable access and services for disabled people.
