2.6 Access to the countryside
All disabled people should have access to a network of off-street footpaths,
public rights of way and rural pathways. The Code of Practice seeks to:
- ensure that new routes and amenities, wherever practicable, are designed
to be accessible to disabled people (see 5.24
Countryside Paths, 5.25 Gates and Stiles
and 5.26 Countryside Furniture)
- encourage the development of a network of pathways in rural areas, particularly
where the footway is available adjacent to the highway
- maintain those pathways which are currently accessible and to improve existing
routes which are currently inaccessible to disabled people
- encourage the provision of accessible car parking and other transport facilities
at main access points.
