Access for All

Disabled people, as well as people with prams and push-chairs, young children and some older people, have particular difficulties in dealing with an environment designed for non disabled people. It is important that these problems are recognised and full weight is given to finding ways to remove the barriers that prevent these people from leading an active life.

The Code of Practice seeks to ensure that:

• special consideration is given to ensure ease of access and movement for disabled people between and within public areas by the careful provision, siting and design of parking areas, paths, dropped kerbs, pedestrian crossings, street furniture and open space
• access to, and egress from, existing buildings and their surroundings is improved as opportunities arise through alterations, extensions and changes of use
• in new developments, suitable provision is made for disabled people, both as employees and customers, in terms of facilities, access/egress and car parking.
