4.3 Signs and notices

Location of signs

Inside buildings:

Pedestrian signs

The design criteria for pedestrian signs are the same as those for any other sign. However, specific criteria for posts and their situation differ to signs within a building. The diagram below details these specifications:

A black signpost column, 100mm diameter, with a white band 150mm wide located 800mm from ground level to assist partially sighted people. Bottom of first directional sign arm on signpost located 2500mm above ground and top sign arm located 3055mm. Each sign arm 700mm long. Lettering on signs Helvetica sans serif using sentence case and strong contrast with background i.e. white on black

Locate sign posts in the external environment so they are in line with any other items of street furniture such as bins and lamp posts. All sign posts should have a contrasting band to assist the partially sighted people.

Design characteristics - Sign boards, Schedule of colour contrast, Characters, Braille, English Standard Braille
