5.6 Tactile paving

Guidance path surface

This is used to guide visually impaired people through a large public open space such as a pedestrian precinct or town square. It can also be used to show a pedestrian "clearway" along a pavement which is free of obstacles such as street furniture. It is designed as a series of low round ended bars laid parallel in the direction of travel (see 5.12 pedestrian areas and 5.2 street furniture).

A single tile measuring 400mm square with flat-topped raised bars running in the direction of travel. Each bar starts 10mm in from the edge of the tile and runs the length of the tile, with the first bar being 25mm in from the parallel edge. The bar is 35mm wide with a gap of 45mm between each bar and is raised 5mm, plus or minus 0.5mm.
