Contents

Tactile surfaces are used to give advanced warning of changes in level or a road crossing to sight-impaired people because they can be detected underfoot. For a fuull list of available tactile surfaces see: Guidance on the use of tactile paving surfaces published by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions.

Blister surface for pedestrian crossings

Used adjacent to safe carriageway crossings. At a controlled crossing, a brick red colour is normally used. At an uncontrolled crossing a buff colour is normally used. Both Colours should contrast with surrounding paving to give maximum visibility.

A single tile measuring either 400mm or 450mm square and 50mm thick. Blisters evenly spaced in rows and columns starting 33mm in from all edges to centre of blister. Each blister raised 5mm, plus or minus 0.5mm, from the surface of tile.
