5.26 Picnic tables

Picnic tables can be designed to allow wheelchair user access at either end. The table legs should be set in by at least 380mm and clear a vertical height of 750mm. Alternatively, the bench seat can be shortened to allow a wheelchair user to have access.

Some picnic tables should be located close to car parks and, specifically, adjacent to spaces reserved for disabled drivers. These should be on hard, flat and non-slip surfaces.

Elevation

Diagram showing a timber picnic table with a top 760mm wide and 130mm deep set on two 150mm wide timber leg structures to give a height of 760mm from floor to table top. On either side of the table are timber bench structures formed so that the seat is on a separate structure from the back. The seat structure is made from a plank on legs with the seat sloping back towards the backrest at a slope of 1 in 10. the seat plank is between 450mm to 480mm high from the floor. The legs of the seat structure are 200mm wide and set 125mm away from the table legs. The back structure comprises 200mm wide legs supporting a plank set at an angle. No other dimensions are given for this structure.

Plan

Diagram showing the table top, 1800mm long and 760mm wide, comprising of six planks fastened to two cross bearers. There is a gap to the right hand side of the table of 760mm minimum for wheelchair access and the cross bearers and legs are set 380mm back under the table to allow for knee space for a wheelchair user. The bench structure measures 480mm deep from front of seat to back of backrest, and 1400mm long.
