5.25 Diagram of a stile

Elevation

Diagram showing a stile set into a timber fence, where the fence comprises two rails fixed to round posts. The stile is formed out of three flat planks fixed to vertical posts to form two steps at an angle to the fence and the top step running along the line of the fence. The first step is set at 90 degrees to the line of the fence and 170mm above the level of the surrounding ground. The second step is set at 45 degrees to the line of the fence and is 170mm above the first step. The third step that is in line with the fence is 560mm above the second step. A vertical post is set close to the steps to allow a person to steady themselves as they negotiate the stile. The top of this post is 400mm above the third step and is rounded to fit the shape of a hand. To the side of the stile a section of the fence has been replaced by removable rails fitted between sets of double vertical posts. These rails can be padlocked or bolted if desired.

Plan

Diagram showing a plan view of the stile. The planks that form the steps are 1200mm minimum in length and 300mm wide with a non-slip surface. The steadying post is set 100mm away from the line of the fence and close to the first step. The removable section of fencing to the side of the stile forms a clear opening of 900mm minimum.
