5.25 Diagram of a kissing gate

Elevation

diagram showing a 1500mm high post on the left hand side from which is hung the kissing gate so that it can swing to either side. On the right hand side is a set of fence posts and rails that form a "U" shape pen that trap the swinging gate and only allow it to swing through 45 degrees in either direction. The horizontal rails on the pen are made of 100mm wide timber with 300mm gap between each rail. The vertical posts of the pen are 1300mm high.

Plan

Diagram showing the plan of the arrangement for the kissing gate. The length of the swinging gate is 1560mm. The distance from the edge of the gate that swings through 45 degrees to the far side of the "U" shape pen is 1580mm when the gate is in the middle position. The width of the pen internally is 1680mm. The internal length of the sides that return back towards the swinging gate is 1750mm. The whole of the "u" shaped pen is constructed so that the open end of the "u" shape starts 1550mm away from the post on which the swinging gate is hinged. The ground in the pen is well compacted, drained and an even surface. Someone using the gate pushes the gate away from them till it hits the far side of the "U" shape pen. They then enter the pen, move as far into it as they can and then push the gate back to hit against the side of the pen they have just entered. This allows them to then exit on the far side of the pen. The gate is hung so that it falls against one of the sides of the pen rather than remaining in the middle position.
