5.2 Street furniture

Contents

Street furniture

Street furniture poses a physical obstruction to blind or partially-sighted people and those with mobility impairments. It should therefore be located in such a way as to preserve a recommended 2000mm wide footway free of obstacles along the main pedestrian route. However, this may need to be reduced to 1800mm minimum in some instances.

Diagram showing section of street

Diagram showing a section of the street with a tree in a 800mm minimum height square planter. The lowest branch is 3000mm from ground level to allow for regrowth. To the right of the tree is a lamppost in between two back-to-back benches near to a shop with a canopy. The bench has armrests and a seat height between 450 and 480mm. There is 2000mm (preferred) clearway along the main street between benches and shop. The bottom edge of the canopy gives 2500mm minimum clearance from pavement level.

Diagram showing section of street

Diagram showing the plan view of the same streetscape, the tree in the planter has 1300mm minimum clearance between it and a litter bin, which is 1100mm minimum height. There is a change in surface colour or texture around the street furniture. There is 2000mm (preferred) clearway along the main street between benches and shop.
