5.1 Footways and footpaths

Contents

Footways and footpaths

A footway, or pavement, is the pedestrian portion of a highway adjacent to, or contiguous with, the carriageway. A footpath is the pedestrian portion of a highway that has no contiguous carriageway associated with it.

Perspective diagram of footpath

Carriageway with footway on the left. A tree obstructs part of the footway with remaining pavement being 1350mm in general and 900mm absolute minimum between obstacles. A width of footway 1800mm minimum allows wheelchairs and prams to pass (2000mm preferred). There is a footpath at 90 degrees to main footway joins the footway. Define footpath sides with positive edging where appropriate and splay or rounded angles at junction with footway to ease progress of wheelchair turning the corner.
