8.5.8 Shower facilities and specialist hygiene facilities

See fact sheets 6.10 Changing Facilities.

Where shower facilities are provided (generally to secondary schools), accessible facilities should also be provided.

Any shower should be level, with no lip or rim, incorporate a seat at transfer level, a handset shower with lever operation, and thermostatic control with water temperature outlet not exceeding 43 degrees celcius.

Changing facilities incorporating grab rails and a tip up seat should also be provided.

For some pupils with more specialist needs, it may be reasonable to provide more specialist facilities such as changing / washing trolley, sluice sink and bath with hoist.
