The preparation of local plans and Unitary Development Plans by Local Planning Authorities offers a valuable opportunity to incorporate consistent policies on access.
This Code of Practice provides a basis for the formulation of policies and supporting reasons for use in local plans and supplementary planning guidance. The appendices give a reference list of publications on access, covering legislation, government and professional guidance and design guidelines from a number of organisations, advice on consultation methods and good practice.
The adoption of consistent policies is seen as vital to ensure developers provide
a good standard of access; also that Local Planning Authorities, in expecting
certain standards on access for disabled people, communicate clearly with the
developers.
