Buildings
6a.3 Dwellings - entrance level toilets
A toilet should be provided in the entrance storey of the dwelling and should
be located so that there is no need to negotiate a stair to reach it from the
habitable rooms in that storey. The toilet compartment should provide a clear
space for wheelchair users to access the toilet. The washbasin should be positioned
so that it does not impede this access.
Design Criteria
The Code of Practice recommends:
- The clear usable space between the front of the toilet bowl and the opposite
wall/door should be 1100mm (750mm minimum standard Part M)
- The toilet door should open outwards
- The distance from the edge of the toilet bowl to the wall should be 700mm
(minimum 450mm from central line of the cistern and the adjoining wall)
- Where oblique access is provided, there should be a minimum of 250mm space
alongside the leading edge of the door
- Where possible the drainage provision for a future shower should be located
within the toilet. The space at the side of the toilet bowl required to allow
side transfer from a wheelchair can be used for this
- Walls in bathrooms and toilets should be capable of taking adaptations such
as handrails. In non load bearing walls plywood reinforcements on 25x50mm
noggins on 100x50mm studs should be located between 300 and 1500mm from the
floor to enable secure fitting of handrails and other load bearing fittings.
