6.22 Dwellings

Entrance level toilets

A toilet should be provided in the entrance storey of the dwelling and should be located so that there is no need to negotiate a stair to reach it from the habitable rooms in that storey. The toilet compartment should provide a clear space for wheelchair users to access the toilet. The washbasin should be positioned so that it does not impede this access.

Design Criteria

The Code of Practice recommends:

Plan showing side entrance layout for toilet

Diagram showing a wheelchair user entering a toilet where the door is in the longer side wall. The door opens outwards and the space alongside the leading edge should be 250mm minimum. The toilet pan is located on the back wall with the centre line 500mm minimum from the door wall and 400mm minimum from the wall opposite the door. A wash basin is shown towards the far end of the wall opposite the door. The distance from the front of the toilet bowl to the far wall is 750mm minimum.

Plan showing front entrance layout for toilet with shower

Diagram showing a wheelchair user entering a toilet where the door is at the front and the toilet on the wall opposite. The distance between the front of the toilet bowl and the door is 1100mm. On one side wall a wash basin is shown and on the other side wall a level access shower with shower drainage. The centre line of the toilet is 400mm minimum from the side wall with the wash basin on it and 700mm minimum from the other side wall where the shower is located.
