6.22 Dwellings

Entrance and thresholds

The external door should have a clear opening width of at least 800 mm (775mm Part M minimum).

It is recommended that all entrances be covered, illuminated and have accessible level access over the threshold level (where unavoidable, Part M allows a maximum of 15mm upstand). There are a number of suggested solutions incorporated in the guidance documents on accessible thresholds, published by The Stationery Office. It should be noted that a covered entrance could also contribute to weather-proofing.
