Cash dispenser units, or Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs), are widely installed,
both outside and inside premises such as banks, building societies and supermarkets.
These should be suitable for use by all customers, including disabled people.
A level area (minimum 1500mm x 1500mm) in front of the ATM should be kept clear
of obstacles. Where machines are installed near busy entrances or inside buildings,
sufficient manoeuvring space, level access and easy to open doors should be
provided.
A recessed area below the controls is preferred, to allow space for wheelchair
foot-plates. Building plinths, machines and fittings should not project into
a pathway and become an obstacle. Receptacles for litter and unwanted receipts
should be positioned to one side, not below the controls where they impede access
by wheelchair users.
Controls should be easy to see and use, and within reach both horizontally
and vertically. The card slot and dispenser should be a maximum of 1300mm and
preferably no higher than 1200mm above the external footway level (or the finished
floor level for internal ATMs). The buttons and display panel should be easily
reached from a
wheelchair. The keyboard should be no higher than 1200mm above pavement/floor
level and angled to be easily seen and used from a wheelchair.
Buttons should be well spaced and colour contrasted. Good colour contrast and
numbers in relief can assist visually impaired users. Voice guidance and other
smart-card technology will enable blind people to use the machines independently.
Text size for instructions and in-display panels should be as large as possible
and easily visible through non-reflective screens. The whole facility should
have adequate lighting, minimising glare and shadows.
